I’m a teacher in California in a district where all teachers start at a little more than $35,000. There is no difference on the pay scale for what grade level or subject is taught. But our cost of living is incredibly high here, (I’m in the San Francisco area) so it may seem like a lot, but it isn’t. The trouble with a music education major will be that jobs teaching music are some of the hardest to find. It is often the first thing that gets cut out of school budgets. The other side of this is that you have to follow your heart.

Yea, I make over 50,000 as a music teacher. For one, you’re normally paid the same or often more than other teachers because more is expected from you with after school rehearsals and concerts. And second, certified music teachers have the dual advantage of being a certified teacher, so they can often pick up extra work with tutoring services, and we’re also musicians, so we can pick up extra work as professional musicians. For myself, I sing at a few different places on the week to supplement my income.

No you won’t make more than 35 K. Get a degree in a real major like physics, computer science, or even chemistry. Major in something that requires thought!!!
